The Yankees celebrate victory
The Yankees had the best regular season record in the major leagues

The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels will do battle for a place in the World Series after sweeping their opponents in the baseball's play-offs.

Chasing a 27th Fall Classic crown, the Yankees sealed a 3-0 American League divisional series win over Minnesota.

The Angels overcame 2004 and 2008 World Series champions Boston, taking a 7-6 road win to also take their series 3-0.

Yankees starting pitcher Andy Pettitte said: "It's going to be a war between us and the Angels."

New York's 4-1 win in game three on Sunday brought the curtain down on baseball at Minnesota's Metrodome, with the Twins due to move to a new ballpark nearby.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire paid tribute to the Yankees, saying: "They deserve all the accolades.

"Great bullpen, bench, the whole deal. I hate it when we play against them because they kill us."

In the National League, the LA Dodgers are through to the Championship Series after sweeping St Louis 3-0.

They will face Philadelphia who beat the Colorado Rockies 5-4 on Monday to clinch a 3-1 series victory.

The best-of-seven-games AL Championship Series begins in New York on Friday, with the NL equivalent starting in Los Angeles on Thursday.
