Wild boar kills old woman

A wild board mauled an old woman to death in a village near the Mt. Potorono forest area in Magelang, Central Java, an official said Wednesday.

Kajoran district chief Bambang Prasetyo Hariyadi told Antara that the animal attacked Samini, 65, at around 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The woman died from severe back wounds while she was being treated at the local community health center.

Samini was buried later that evening.

One of her grandsons, Salamun, said his grandmother had come across the boar while she was walking down the village road. The animal, which had stab wounds to several parts of its body, suddenly charged at Samini. “She screamed for help,” said Salamun, who ran to help and took his grandmother to the community health center.

Dozens of Kajoran people and a hunter then searched for the boar and discovered it not far from the forest. The villagers had no difficulty killing the animal, which weighed around 200 kilograms.

Potorono forest has been declared a conservatory for endangered animals including wild boars, native cats and eagles.
